A study for Community Groups to use the week of November 9th

To prepare for your group discussion each week, group members should use the Series Guide to complete foundational questions in the book for week 3 using the scripture below.

Week Four: Matthew 13:44-46

Overview
From beginning to end of Jesus’ time on this earth the kingdom of God was a subject He could not stop talking about. It was one of the first things He proclaimed there on the banks of the Jordan. It was what He told His disciples about even after His resurrection. It was proclaimed through parables, subtly mentioned in prayers. But what is it? Kingdom Come is an invitation for all of us to engage Jesus’ invitation to allow His goodness and grace to increasingly rule every area of our hearts so that good news multiplies from every heart and every home; beginning with ours.
Passage: Matthew 13:44-46
“Jesus now removed Himself from the crowds by reentering the house. Jesus’ disciples were not different from the crowd because they immediately understood the parables. They were different because they persisted in asking Jesus to help them understand the parables, whereas the crowds showed less interest.”

Questions
*In the Series Guide you will find basic questions we want all to use as they begin to look at the passage. Questions such as; Who have you had the opportunity to BLESS this week? What does this passage reveal about God? About people? About the life He has planned for us? These additional questions relate to the passage specifically for your benefit.
1. What both surprises and challenges you about these two short parables? What do they have in common? What subtle differences do you see with them?
2. If you looked at your calendar and finances would they reflect what you say your value most? What significant steps might the parables be asking you to consider in this season?
3. It might be hard for you to imagine the idea of selling everything to obtain the kingdom, but can you put into words what you think the men in the parables are saying to themselves? Is there anything specific in your life preventing you from taking the step God wants you to take? How might fear or hesitation hinder someone from fully sacrificing what God would want?
4. In both of these parables we find joy and sacrifice linked together. How have you experienced joy amid sacrifice in your journey of faith in the past? How might the Lord be prompting you towards a step of sacrifice today? How does knowing the way He has brought joy through sacrifice in the past strengthen your heart in the present?
